Why we pray
Why Cathedral Baptist Church believes in the power of prayer
Prayer is not a last resort at Cathedral Baptist Church. It is how the family of God talks with our Father, leans on His promises, and bears one another’s burdens. We believe the Lord still hears, still answers, and still works through the prayers of His people. He invites us to come boldly, to pray for one another, and to keep praying without losing heart.
Why we believe in prayer
God commands His people to pray.
Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
Prayer is how we bring every need to God instead of carrying anxiety alone.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6–7
The prayer of faith is powerful and effective.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
James 5:16
We may come near to God with confidence because of Jesus.
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16
God hears when we ask according to His will.
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
1 John 5:14–15
The Holy Spirit helps us when we do not know how to pray.
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Romans 8:26–27
Jesus taught us to keep praying and not lose heart.
Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart.

Why you should ask others to pray for you
Scripture tells believers to pray for one another. Asking for prayer is obedience, not weakness.
Pray for one another so that you may be healed.
James 5:16
The church is a body. When one member hurts, the others are called to help through prayer.
With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit… with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:18
Agreement in prayer matters. Jesus promised His presence when His people gather in His name.
Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
Matthew 18:19–20
God often uses the prayers of many to bring help and thanksgiving. Sharing a need lets the church join you before the throne of grace.
If you are suffering, sick, anxious, grateful, or simply in need of the Lord, you are welcome to submit a request. You do not have to walk through it alone.
How to pray biblically
Pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit. Come as a child, not as a performer.
But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:6
Follow the pattern Jesus gave. Honor God’s name, seek His will, ask for daily needs, confess sin, and ask for protection.
Pray, then, in this way:
Matthew 6:9–13
Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Ask, seek, and knock. The Father delights to give what is good to His children.
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you… If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!
Matthew 7:7, 11
Pray with thanksgiving, not empty words. God already knows the need; He still wants you to bring it.
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.
Colossians 4:2
Pray in faith, according to His Word and His will. Trust His character even when the answer is “wait” or “no.”
A simple way to begin: praise God, confess sin, thank Him, then ask for what you and others need—always in Jesus’ name.
Our Prayer Warrior team
The Prayer Warrior team is a group of believers at Cathedral Baptist Church who have committed to receive new prayer requests and lift them to the Lord. They are not a special class of Christians. They are brothers and sisters who take James 5:16 seriously: they pray for one another so that healing, help, and God’s will may be sought together.
This team matters because intercession is ministry. When a request comes in, someone in the body is standing in the gap. That is how a church loves well—quietly, faithfully, and according to Scripture. Prayer Warriors help carry burdens that would be too heavy for one person to hold alone. They remind the church that we depend on the Lord, not on ourselves.
If the Lord has given you a heart to pray, this team needs you. You do not have to have perfect words. You need a willing heart, a Bible, and a desire to obey “pray at all times in the Spirit… with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.”
