Wednesday Night Meal and a Message.

The meal

We share a potluck-style meal, with dessert, in the Fisher Fellowship Hall. The meal starts at 6:00 PM. Bring a dish if you can. Come anyway if you cannot. Food is provided for the children as well. After we eat, everyone splits off for their own programs.

Why we gather

We do this because the church is not only a place we attend. It is a people we belong to. The early church “continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). They ate together “with gladness and singleness of heart” (Acts 2:46). Breaking bread was not a side activity. It was part of how they stayed one body.

Scripture commands this kind of gathering

• “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another” (Hebrews 10:24–25). We meet so we can stir one another up and keep each other from drifting.
• “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Fellowship is walking together in the light, not merely sitting in the same room.
• “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). A shared meal and an open study give room to know what those burdens actually are.
• “Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:9–10). Serving a plate, watching a child, or answering a question is ministry.
• “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love… Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality” (Romans 12:10, 13).
• “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). An open Bible study is one way that happens.
• “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another” (Colossians 3:16). Wednesday is built for that kind of mutual teaching.
• “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).

Why Wednesday stays simple

At Cathedral we keep Wednesday simple on purpose: a table, the Word, and room for every age. The meal is how we practice hospitality. The study is how we stay under Scripture together. The children’s programs are how we pass the faith on while the adults open the Bible. None of it replaces Sunday worship. It strengthens the church that gathers on Sunday.
