About this ministry
Youth
At Cathedral Baptist, the years of youth are not a waiting room. They are the years in which character is formed, convictions are settled, and the next generation of servants is raised. Scripture does not treat the training of children as optional. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Moses charged parents to teach the words of God diligently, talking of them at home and along the way (Deuteronomy 6:6–7). Paul told fathers to bring their children up “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). What is planted in the heart early shapes the life that follows.
We take that charge seriously
Our young people are the future pastors, teachers, parents, and witnesses of this church. A public testimony means little if Christ is not Lord in the private life. The same qualities Scripture calls for in a mature believer must be learned while the habits of youth are still being set. “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). That is the aim of this ministry: not activity for its own sake, but young men and women who follow Christ when no one is watching.
A godly child, as Scripture describes
Scripture describes a godly child by how he or she acts, not by age. These are the marks we want to see formed in our students, and the ways this ministry seeks to nourish them.
Obedience to parents and to the Lord
A godly child honors father and mother and receives instruction. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1). “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother” (Proverbs 1:8). Cathedral seeks to reinforce, not replace, the home. Wednesday night teaching, AWANA memory work, and the counsel of youth leaders all point students back to the authority God has already placed over them.
A love for the Word and a willingness to be taught
The young are called to receive correction and to hide Scripture in the heart. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9). “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). Students meet on Wednesday nights while the rest of the church is in AWANA and adult study. The teaching is meant to open the Bible, not merely fill an hour, so the Word can take root before the pressures of later years arrive.
Purity in speech, conduct, and private life
Timothy was told not to let anyone despise his youth, but to be an example “in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22). Camp, trips such as SOAR, and ordinary Wednesday nights give leaders a place to speak plainly about purity and to watch for the private life, not only the public one.
Self-control and a refusal to be ruled by the crowd
A godly young person does not follow every impulse or every friend. “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls” (Proverbs 25:28). “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Fellowship here is deliberate. Car washes, service, and shared trips put students beside other young people who are being taught the same standard, so the company they keep works with the teaching rather than against it.
Humility and a servant’s heart
Greatness in the kingdom is measured by service, not by being noticed. “Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister” (Matthew 20:26). “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3). Service projects and ordinary church work are part of the year so students practice putting others first while the habit is still being formed.
Honesty and a good name
Character is shown in what is said when it costs something. “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches” (Proverbs 22:1). “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds” (Colossians 3:9). Leaders treat integrity as part of discipleship. A testimony that does not hold up at school, at home, or on a trip is not the testimony this ministry is after.
Faith that shows itself when no one is watching
The aim is not a performance for adults. “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right” (Proverbs 20:11). “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Worship, camp, and the weekly gathering exist so Christ is Lord in the quiet hours as well as in the church building.
Fellowship
Fellowship is not a side benefit. In a world that pulls young people apart and fills the quiet hours with noise, the company of believers is a real joy and a real safeguard. “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another” (Hebrews 10:25). “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Young people who walk with other young people who love the Lord are stronger for it.
